The Kruger National Park is probably South Africa’s best-known national park and one of the largest in the country. Established in 1926 it was the first national park in South Africa.  It is made up of endless Lowveld plains with occational hills, rivers and some gorges. The park supports a wide variety of animals including 145 species of mammals, 517 species of birds and 114 species of reptile. With a good climate, fairly lush environment and ample space, wildlife numbers are healthy and include over 2000 lions, 11000 elephants and 25 000 buffalo. Other animals in the park include rhino, leopard, giraffe, hippos, hyena, wild dog, kudu, zebra, eland, crocodiles and impala. Many of the more elusive or less common animals are quite difficult to see. Try look for cheetah along the H4-2 between Crocodile Bridge and Lower Sabie, or for sable antelope near the Manzimhlope Dam.

The Kruger has a good infrastructure with 21 rest camps as well as many other private safari lodges.  Roads are in good condition and are accessible by 2×4 vehicles. There are also various fuel points, shops and restaurants in the park itself. Guided walks, trails and drives are available, as well as various other activities.

Being so large the park is surrounded by around a population of around 3 million, living within 181 communities. There are many initiatives aimed empowering local communities through the parks conservation and eco-tourism initiatives. To get to the park visitors can either fly to one of three airports near the Kruger – Nelspruit, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa – where one can also rent a vehicle. Otherwise visitors can drive from Johannesberg, a drive of almost 4 hours.

Our Kruger Park map is an updated and redesigned version of our older Kruger map. The edition contains in-depth information regarding roads and infrastructure, distances and points of interest. Info-blocks inform the traveller about 4×4 trails, booking information, best drives and more. It also includes a list with a number of highly recommended accommodation options outside the Kruger National Park. The map also has information on the Parque Nacional Do Limpopo, or Limpopo National Park, across the border in Mozambique.
