Meaning the Dragons Mountains in Afrikaans, the Drakensberg have long held a very special place in South African life. Birthplace of many Zulu kings, it was crossed by Boer communities in ox wagons during the Great Trek and became the site of various battles, including Blood River.
The Drakensberg range stretches for 1000km and reaches it highest peak at Thabana Ntlenyana, 3,482 metres., although it has many other high peaks such as Giants Castle and Cathedral Peak. Lush, dramatic and beautiful, this area attracts outdoor enthusiast such as hikers, bikers, kayakers and horse riders. The area also has various game reserves such as Nambiti and Tugela near Ladismith. Further west towards the Maluti Moutains in the Eastern Free State one reaches the Golden Gate Highlands National Park.
